Jump on these deals—and save some major money—to make of the most of Presidents’ Day sales this year.

With Presidents’ Day just around the corner—Presidents’ Day weekend 2020 is February 15 through 17, with Monday, February 17, as the actual holiday—you and your go-to shopping buddy may be making a plan of attack for those can’t-miss Presidents’ Day sales already. Keep in mind, though, that not all sales are created equal, and there’s a time and a place to buy everything, even those optimistic, ready-for-spring sandals.

Sure, a discount is a discount. Anyone in desperate need of a new pair of pants can wait until the next small sale weekend and save a few dollars on a new pair, but if waiting is an option, holding out until an end-of-season sale can mean even bigger savings. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are two of the biggest shopping days of the year, and even then, there are items that will have bigger savings opportunities at a later date—likely early in the new year.

As Presidents’ Day sales near, it’s good to know which items will be at some of their lowest prices of the year—especially those big-ticket purchases, where capitalizing on even a 10 percent discount can mean saving hundreds of dollars. This year, by focusing on big-ticket items and skipping over the smaller, repeating sales, you can set yourself up for shopping success for the whole year. (Those sandals will be on sale again soon enough.)

If you’ve been waiting to buy one of these pricey items, Presidents’ Day sales may be the right time to strike. If you haven’t, though, don’t go picking up a new refrigerator just for the thrill, as that kind of defeats the purpose of savvy shopping and waiting for the right sale. As with anything, timing is the key to shopping—especially if it means the difference between spending $1,500 and spending $1,000. Watch for sales on these types of items from top retailers, and be prepared to act once the right price appears.

Appliances

An analysis by personal finance site WalletHub found that the average discount on appliances during Black Friday, one of the top shopping days of the year, is 30 percent; this year, the Lowe’s Presidents’ Day sale is offering up to 40 percent off select kitchen appliances. In 2019, LG sold its mega-capacity WM8100 front-load washer at $400 off its retail price and offered discounts on kitchen appliance bundles. For similar brands and stores, ’tis the season: Other major appliance retailers are likely to offer comparable deals over Presidents’ Day weekend.

Furniture

Sara Skirboll, a shopping and trends expert at RetailMeNot, has previously told Real Simple that furniture discounts are highest in January and in three-day holiday weekends such as Presidents’ Day. Act on that expert suggestion and pick up a new couch, dining set, or whatever else has been missing from the house.

Mattresses

Consumer Reports says mattresses are often on deep discount in February, and the extended Presidents’ Day weekend is an excellent opportunity to spend a day lying on mattresses in various stores until you find the right one.
